Open coil springs are reliable and long lasting.
A well made, ‘open coil’ mattress is a better buy than a cheaply made pocket sprung mattress. Top quality German 'Bonnel' springs are wrapped in coir fibre, wool and cotton, covered in traditional pure cotton or linen ticking (mattress cloth), and hand tufted (buttoned).
There are three grades to choose from, all with equal quality workmanship, covers and springs.
The difference between them is the quantity and type of fillings used:
Our pocket sprung mattresses are made with thousands of fine, responsive springs, nested in fabric pockets and arranged in a tightly packed honeycomb formation. Each spring is free to move independently. This allows them to adapt more readily to different requirements and body types, thereby meeting the most demanding of needs. Only the springs that one rests directly upon will respond to movement, so there is very little transference across to disturb a partner. These can be made to any size, and are not limited to 3” (75 mm) increments. All are 10 “ (25 cm) deep, hand tufted, with a supple wool insulation pad and deeply filled with layers of pure white cotton. 1200 & 1500 denote the number of springs in a 5’0” (152 cm) mattress.
We offer 3 types:
Pocket springs contour readily to your body and offer more support whilst you sleep.
SHORTENING - up to 3’3 wide (99 cm) add £30; up to 5’0 wide (152 cm) add £40; over 5’3 (160 cm) add £50.
LENGTHENING: 15% per 3” (7.5 cm), thereafter 10% per 3” (7.5 cm).
WIDENING: Add 20% PER 3” (7.5 CM), THEREAFTER 10% PER 3” (7.5 CM)
ALL COTTON FILL (Classic and Luxury only ) +15%.
ZIPPING: £40 per pair (Allow 2 — 3 weeks)
and are not limited to multiples of 3” (7.5 cm).
(Allow up to 5 weeks for SPECIAL SIZES to be made).
SHORTENING: - A one off charge of £40.
LENGTHENING: 10% per 3” (7.5 cm), thereafter 5% per 3” (7.5 cm).
WIDENING: 15% per 3” (7.5 cm), thereafter 10% per 3” (7.5 cm)

‘1200’ Firm:
1200 thicker ‘16 gauge’ springs for the firmest feel luxury and benefits of pocket springs. |
'1500’ Medium:
The highest count, supportive and densely packed with 1500 ‘17 gauge’ springs. |
The most responsive mattress, for those who wish to be immersed in softness. 1200 ‘17 gauge’ springs. |
All mattresses are fire resistant to BS 7177 and carry a TEN YEAR labour and materials guarantee

Pocket springs should always be correctly supported. We recommend that the gaps between the slats do not exceed 2.25” (60 mm). All beds ordered with our pocket sprung mattresses therefore have two extra slats - supplied free of charge.
For a Medium feel, choose Orthopaedic ('ortho') mattresses with 13.5 gauge springs.
For Firmer support, choose Super Orthopaedic ('super o') which have thicker 12.5 gauge springs, and are 1.5” (40 mm) deeper.
