MODIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SIZES

High quality German (Bonnel) springs are wrapped with wool and cotton, then covered with pure cotton or linen feather proof ticking (mattress cloth) and hand tufted (buttoned).

The ‘YORKTON’, ‘CLASSIC’ and ‘LUXURY’ mattresses are equally carefully made. Their price difference reflects the amount of fillings they contain. Good fillings are the key to comfort and durability, and are more important than springs. Our natural filled open coil mattresses are superior in quality to most of the 'pocket' sprung mattresses on the market today, which are made with synthetic fillings. Many returning customers choose them, not for their price but because they find them so comfortable.

More costly pocket springs are made with thousands of very fine, responsive springs, nested in a cloth pocket and are arranged in a tightly packed honeycomb formation. Each spring is free to move independently. This allows them to adapt readily to different requirements and body types, thereby meeting the most demanding of needs. Only the springs that one rests directly upon respond, and there is minimal transference of movement from a restless partner.

They can be made to any size, and unlike open coil springs, are not limited to 3” (75 mm) increments. All are hand tufted, 10 “ (25 cm) deep, and deeply filled with layers of wool and white cotton. ‘1200’ & ‘1500’ denote the number of springs in a 5’0” (152 cm) mattress.

Pocket springs need to be correctly supported. The gaps between the slats should not exceed 2.25” (60 mm). All beds ordered with our pocket sprung mattresses will therefore have two extra slats - supplied for no extra charge.

Never fold a sprung mattress as this can permanently damage the springs. Although it is sometimes necessary to bend one when access is tight, this is potentially damaging, Care should be taken not to bend more than is absolutely necessary.

‘Pocket’ springs are more flexible than ‘open' coil in this situation, and are less likely to be damaged.

All can be damaged by localised pressure, for example by children jumping on them, or by resting heavy objects on them.

TURNING

Turn and rotate.

Mattresses benefit from being turned periodically. During the first three months, turn every 3 - 4 weeks. Thereafter, every few months, and more frequently if there is a marked difference in the weight of the occupants. This will aid even settlement and prolong the life of the mattress.

Please note: The handles are there for positioning the mattress, and not for carrying it.

ENSURE THAT YOUR MATTRESS IS CORRECTLY SUPPORTED AND VENTILATED

A firm, flat and well ventilated base is essential. Natural filled mattresses need air to circulate freely or they will trap moisture and deteriorate. The supporting base can be either slatted or sprung. If a pocket sprung mattress is to be placed on a slatted base, the slats should be no more than 6 cm (2¼”) apart.

ADJUSTMENT AND SETTLEMENT

A new mattress may initially feel strange. This is normal. Allow time for the fillings to settle, and most importantly, allow your body to adjust to the changes. The area you sleep on will always depress slightly.

New mattresses may sometimes emit a slight odour which will disperse quickly once aired.

PROTECTION

A washable mattress protector will help to control dust mite and protect it from stains and spills.

CLEANING

Detergents and chemical cleaners may cause damage and discolouration. Spillages should be dabbed with an absorbent dry cloth. Mild, soapy water may be used if necessary and the mattress should then be well aired. Avoid soaking as this may cause damage.

Dust and fluff can be removed with a soft brush.
